What to do in case of a Hurricane?

Before:

• If your house is fragile, anticipate which is the place intended as a shelter by the authorities.
• Carry out all the necessary repairs in roofs, windows and walls in order to avoid greater damages.
• Try to secure a place in order to protect your animals and work equipment.
• Have your important documents (birth, marriage certificates, titles, agricultural documents, etc.) kept in plastic bags and inside a satchel or bag that enable your arms and hands to be free.
• If your home is sufficiently safe, remains in it, but if you receive an evacuation call from the authorities, DO SO!!!
• If you decide to remain in your house, have at hand emergency articles and keep your battery radio on in order to receive information or instructions from official sources.
• Close doors and windows, internally protecting the glasses with adhesive tape placed in the form of an ex (X) and draw the curtains, because they can protect you from any glass shattering.
• Secure all loose objects that the wind can throw and move all the television antennas, signs or any other hanging objects.
• Have at hand warm clothes or raincoat.
• Clean the terraced roof, drainage, grooves and drainers and sweep the street by cleaning properly the sewers.

During:

• Disconnect the power switch and close the gas and water valves.
• Continue listening to your battery radio in order to obtain information or instructions about the hurricane.
• Keep-away from doors and windows. If the wind opens a door or a window, do not go near it in a direct manner.
• Keep a constant watch at the water level near your house.
• Do not go out until the authorities indicate that there the danger has passed. The eye of the hurricane creates a calmness that can last one hour.

After:

• Take care that your food is clean, do not eat anything raw nor of uncertain origin and drink only drinkable water which you have stored or boil the one that you are going to drink.
• Use close-up footwear.
• Carefully clean any spill medicine, toxic or flammable substances.
• If your house did not suffer damages, remain there.
• Keep the gas, power and water disconnected until you are sure that there are no escapes or short circuit danger.
• Make sure that your electronic appliances are dry before connecting them.
• Clear stagnant water in order to avoid mosquito plagues.
• Keep away from disaster areas.
• Avoid touching or stepping on electric cables.
• Keep away from houses, trees and posts in danger of falling.
• Keep in touch with the first-aid team and provide the necessary information.
