Jamaica Red Cross aids flood victims in Portland, St. Mary and St. Ann

The Jamaica Red Cross this week launched a massive Relief operation in the disaster-affected parishes of Portland, St. Mary and St. Ann. Since last weekend the eastern section of the island, in the parishes of Portland, St. Mary and St. Ann has been affected by landslides, floods caused by five days of continuous rainfall. To date some 130 families(780 people) affected by the disaster have received food, blankets as well as hygiene articles.

The distribution were carried out by volunteers of the Jamaica Red Cross Portland, St. Ann and St. Mary branches.After five days of continuous heavy rainfall, resulting in landslides and flooding, over 30 communities have been affected in the parishes of Portland, St. Mary and St. Ann. The disaster has left 2 persons dead and some 400 families homeless and in some instances totally displaced due to massive landslides.
